Germany / Recognition: 2025 Foreign-Qualification Applications Reach New High

Germany’s official recognition statistics for 2025 reached a new high. On 19 August 2026, BIBB Recognition Monitoring, using data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), reported about 76,200 applications for recognition of foreign professional qualifications, 7% more than in 2024.

Health professions remained central. Around 21,500 applications concerned nursing professionals (including health and nursing occupations), while about 12,900 concerned physicians. BIBB also reported increases for physicians (+19%), pharmacists (+42%), industrial electronics technicians (+30%), cooks (+26%), physiotherapists (+24%) and dentists (+23%).

Around 73,600 recognition procedures were decided in 2025. About 44% ended with full equivalence, about 45% required a compensatory measure, about 10% resulted in partial equivalence, and fewer than 2% ended negatively.

What this means for WAB users: candidates should identify the exact German reference profession and check recognition requirements early, particularly for regulated professions. Employers recruiting internationally should account for recognition and any required compensatory measures in their recruitment timelines.
